DIY Metallic pants tutorial

top: macys   pants: refashioned   watch: michael kors  shoes: f21

I loved how these pants turned out so much that I'm considering spray painting half of my wardrobe. I'm loving the metallic theme this season, so I decided to buy some gold spray paint and spray down some pants. I was shocked how they turned out, in a good way. I still want to spray 2 more layers of gold to make it even shinier.

If you have questions about the spray paint and how to do it, continue below.
Pictures by Corey Bryson.

How to do it:
1. Get some metallic spray paint or this (craft spray paint)...I couldn't find fabric specific metal spray paint, but find one that is for fabric or fabric flowers.
2. Get some pants that will work well with the paint color you use. The less porous or absorbent the fabric is the better the shine will show.
3. Test out the paint somewhere you won't see it. I did the inside butt pockets. I tested out different intensities of the spray as you can see from the picture below.
4. Hang the pants on a hanger and spray evenly over the pants front and back from 1.5' to 2' away. Don't spray too close or too heavy it will be uneven and blotchy. That's why I did so many layers.
5. Let dry and repeat.
6. Do as many layers as you like. I found that the more layers the shinier it is. I did about 6 layers and I still want to do a few more.
7. You will notice it will smell like spray paint, so after it has completely dried for a day throw it into a gentle short cold cycle with a little laundry soap in the wash. Let it air dry. It will help soften it and take out the smell. A lot of the smell will fade over time even without washing them.
OR
As a commenter said....Trick for the smell? Stick the pants in a plastic ziplock bag, squeeze as much air out as possible, and put them in the freezer for a day or two. Smell is miraculously gone.

    1. Yes! It may dull it a little, but for the most part it stays completely the same.

    1. No! Shockingly not. But it probably depends on the paint.

    1. Maybe, 1/4 to half a can. Not as much as you would think! But I did use a bigger can.

  21. Does the paint crack or chip when you wash it? These are absolutely adorable! It spruces up a t-shirt and jeans so simply!

    1. Not at all...if anything if just fades a little every time you wash it. It ended up being very flexible and soft. Crazy!

  23. I think I may have to do this but cover up some of the pants in someway to create a pattern.
