Easy trousers to maxi skirt with slit refashion tutorial!

top: h&m   jacket: guess  shoes: sam edelmen  skirt: refashioned (tutorial below)
dagger necklace: jewelmint    pendant: poshlocket  hat: oasap

Nothing like up-cycling a pair of quality, 90s, high waisted trousers that seem un-refashionable. Another item I found among the forgotten, not-so-fashionable clothing items in the upstairs closest, score! I actually was stumped on this one for a while, then thought about those cute maxis with front slits, and again, another maxi was born. And I do say...I'm in love. Thanks to my hubby for taking the pictures.
Supplies:
Trousers that are a little bit bigger (I'm not sure about pants that fit perfectly...someone let me know if they try it with their size of pant?)
sewing machine
thread
scissors
pins

Instructions:
1. seam rip the inseam of the pants and lining (if you plan on keeping the lining). Seam rip open the bottom hem as well.
2. Match up the front inseams and the back inseams and pin, including the bottom hem's sides (they will fold back up later into a hem again, unless you want it longer like I did). When you pin, make sure the original seam allowances are opened up, so you aren't sewing a fold into your seams. Sew up the inseams, bypassing the crouch part. Try to make this pretty straight near the bottom and rounded for your tush at the top.  Leave a slit in the front or back (I chose front) about knee hieght. Also keep the zipper intact if you can, if the pants are very big you may have to re-install one.
3. Cut extra fabric and the lining off (unless you want to keep the lining in there, then sew up the lining's front inseams and back inseams, then cut it knee length above the slit and hem).
4. Hem the bottom again and the slit by handstitching the previous seam allowance closed. If you cut out the old seam allowance, then just fold/iron under about 3/4 inch then hand stitch down.

  1. I just went back a lot of posts to see that you are now living in SF! How exciting! I live in the East Bay, so who knows, maybe one day we'll run into each other :)

  3. I made a pencil skirt out of trousers once for my blog, the skirt ended up being my favorite! I really think pants make an excellent + easy transition to skirts.

  5. Love this restyle. I also loved how La Vie en Rose did this restyle (pants to pencil skirt) last year here: http://laviediy.blogspot.com/2012/02/pants-to-pencil-skirt-refashion.html

I posted the before and after photos with a link back to your blog on my Tumblr truebluemeandyou blog.

  6. This is awesome! I definitely want to try this with some trousers or even some jeans might be fun. I always looked at pants and skirts when I was young and thought that pants must be so easy to make because you just cut two slits in a skirt and then sew it up, and vice versa haha. Obviously I know now that it's quite a bit more complicated than that but that's what this reminded me of. Anyways thanks for the idea and tutorial. I'll have to try it and let you know how it goes!

  12. You look amazing with that hat! I love the make-over you gave the pants. I'm not too handy with a sewing machine, so I'm not sure I could do this one :) x

  13. Awesome, I love the style of the leather jackets on the site cwmalls.com and the fit definitely suits me, the leather is excellent, too.

  14. You asked so I'll answer - I've done several pants to skirt refashions using pants that were my size, even ones that were a bit too small at the waistband. Both worked well. The ones that were too small to wear as pants worked because the waistband sat higher on me to make a high-waisted maxi skirt.
