Summer sheath dress refashion tutorial - perfect for spring and summer!

The other day I was exploring the house I'm in and noticed a closet a quarter full of clothes of the 90s. You wouldn't believe the excitement I had...mainly because I haven't been having luck at the thrift stores here and I didn't bring anything refashionable from home. This was just what I needed!

I first was going to make this into a maxi skirt because it was very loose and long, but then realized I don't have many fitted knit dresses and I love them. Especially this material because it is a thicker, fun patterned knit. Just a quick take in and up and bam! Perfect versatile sheath dress you can pop on with some sandals when you head to go shopping with the girls, or adds some high heels to vamp it up for that romantic date with your main squeeze.

or measuring tape....to take down your measurements and sew it according to your size.

Instructions:

1. Find a knit dress you like the fit of, it doesn't need to be the exact shape, but close enough because you can take it in even more later to make it fit how you like it. Mark (I used pins, but you can use a fabric pen) around the dress adding an inch or so on each side for seam allowance and security (incase it ends up being too small). Sew up the sides and sleeves along the markings. Try it on inside out and make sure it fits right, I took my in 2 more times after I tried it on the first time I altered it. 

2. Cut off the bottom to be as short as you like with1.25" extra for hemming.

3.  Cut out all the extra fabric. 

4. Hem the bottom by folding under a quarter inch, ironing, then folding under again an inch and ironing. Then sew along the folded upper edge of the hem a straight topstitch, but make sure to stretch as you sew (allows the bottom to stretch as you walk). If you are more comfortable with adding a zig zag stitch you can (I just don't like how that looks).
