This was a fun top to make because it was such a fast and easy refashion that takes a $4 shirt (or plain, non-special tee you have laying) and transforms it into something more fun and expensive looking. It will go with anything and the sheer can be any color or pattern you like. It can even be a knit (like this one).
This can also double as a cute summer coverup, revealing a little swimsuit surprise in the back. I can't wait to wear this for that exact reason!
top: self-made - blue jeans: joe jeans - striped jeans: h&m - nude shoes: 7 for all mankind - black shoes: sam edelman
Supplies: Tee shirt
Sheer material like polyester or silk chiffon-as much material as you need for a back of a shirt. I used scraps I had.
Sewing machine
Thread
Scissors
Pins
Instructions: 1. Cut out the back of the shirt except keep the ribbing (collar) part intact. Seam rip the collar (ribbing) a few inches into the front like pic #4.
2. Take the back piece you just cut out and place it on top of your sheer material. Cut out a new back piece using the old back piece as a guide. I tapered mine out a few or so extra inches to so it will be a little loose. Make sure to add at least 1/2 to 3/4 inch extra around the new piece for seam allowance.
3. Pin the sheer piece to the inside out tee shirt front's shoulders, back half of sleeve, and sides leaving the ribbing out of it for now. Try to match up the corners and curves like they should. Sew and serge.
4.&5. Pin the ribbing back to the shirt front and new sheer back by pinning the front of the ribbing to the front of the shirt, sewing, then flipping the ribbing upwards.
6. Cut the bottom how you like. I cut mine this way. 7. Hem. I hemmed the sheer to be sewn under a 1/8 inch then folded again 1/4. Then I folded the knit 3/4 once.
