Here is that tutorial I promised - I forgot to mention that I technically "upcycled" this skirt from unwanted fabric (which I wanted, duh). Do you know the difference between upcycling and refashioning? Well, there isn't much of a difference! Upcycling is when you turn unused stuff, or junk to something useable, while refashioning is when you take something and transform it into something else. In another words...it is just a more awesome new way to say refashioning.
Anyway....
1. First and foremost cut the piece of fabric to the width (formula below) and length plus 2.5 inches (how long you want it to be), make sure it is PERFECTLY cut....then sew the bottom, top and ends in an inch (which I wish I had done) !
Last, sew in a zipper, buttons, or hook and eyes (that what I did) onto extra fabric that was sewed under, so you can't see any extra sewing. Unless you want the buttons or zippers to be seen!
If only I could sew... once again, if you ever start taking orders, let me know! :)
ReplyDeleteawesome! i will have to try this when i get some free time!
ReplyDeleteA skirt with a hook and eye instead of a zipper? I LOVE that idea! Zippers can be such a pain! This is definitely a really cute skirt that I'm going to have to make!
ReplyDeletethis is gorgeous ! I love the elegance of it. Want to add a big brown leather belt to it...when I am done being pregnant that is. Lol, would look silly if I tried it now :)
ReplyDeleteokay, this is like the coolest thing ever. i now really really really want to make one. i'm going fabric shopping! or, thrift fabric shopping!
ReplyDeleteLove this skirt! Although I don't think my sewing skills are up to par...

Thanks for this tutorial! I made this skirt the other night (out of some vintage '70s fabric I'd recently got from a thrift store) and it took just a couple of hours, so easy! This is a great pattern to complement curves- it makes my waist look tiny!
ReplyDeleteThe only thing I'd add is to make it just a tad wider- I would have added another two inches. As it was, I had to sew the seam with just a 1/4" seam allowance so that it would fit! Also, don't turn up and sew the bottom until the end so you can try it on and make sure it's the right length.
Thanks again! I made it in brown for fall/winter and I think I'll make a crisp bright one in the spring!
So cute! What kind of fabric did you use here?
ReplyDeleteWonderful tutorial! I just made this skirt this morning out of part of a curtain panel! I had extra fabric from making a valance and was saving it for something. It fits me perfectly and I'm excited to show it off at Christmas.
ReplyDeleteplease tell me where you got your shoes!? i love them!
ReplyDeleteYes, the shoes. Adorbs! Can you tell us what they are....?
ReplyDeleteLove the skirt too, btw. Your tuts are all so helpful, they're making me brave enough to foray into some refashioning for myself. Thanks!

ReplyDeleteAw, i wish i have a sewing machine. :(
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry but I am very new to sewing. What does " sewing ends in" mean? Any tutorials out there?
ReplyDeleteJust made this and I LOVE IT! I used a light summery fabric, so it wasn't as stiff below the pleats, but just draped really easily. I had a bit of a tricky time making a closure though, I tried 3 different things, and ended up sewing up most of the back, and then using 3 hook & eye closures at the top, I'd love to see a shot of what exactly you did.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great idea!
Also, for monster above, sewing ends in, means you fold the fabric in on itself and sew it down, so that the fabric doesn't unravel.
I googled it, and this was the first result: https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CCcQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.studioknits.com%2Fbookpage99.htm&ei=gImNT_mvMoO08ATm_amcDg&usg=AFQjCNE-gV--Ik9Ud2uDkx19icmZoBLj9A&sig2=j_kawjkoSNFEvleOgHm1jg
