Oversized pants into bell bottoms tutorial

I've always grown up loving older styles, my favorite has always been the 70s. With the high waisted bell bottoms, wedges, middle parted long hair...etc etc. I love looking at pictures of my mom in high school wearing the oversized plaid tops and towering wedges. I desperately try to seek bell bottoms at thrift stores, something straight from someone's attic that was worn in woodstock. But until then, I guess I will just have to make my own. So steal your husband's/boyfriend's/whoever's oversized jeans and go at it. With oversized pants to work with, they will most likely give you the option of turning them into something high waisted.

Supplies:
oversized pants
marking pen or chalk
sewing machine
scissors
thread
pins

Instructions:
**Be careful of the pockets....make sure they aren't going to look funny when the sides are taken in. If they might, consider taking the pockets off and putting them back where they should be.
1. Turn them inside out and mark how much you need to take in on your body. This is done by pinching both sides at the same time, then letting go of one and marking it. Then re-grabing the other and marking it. Just mark to a little above the knee. Then you will taper toward the seam from there. (you can watch this video on how I mark)
2. Pin and sew along the markings. I did a basting stitch first to make sure, tried them on, then secured it with a stronger stitch.
3. Serge If you like. Or you can cut close to the new seam and run a zig zag stitch along it the raw edge.

  2. Pure genius. I have such a love affair for bell bottoms but always seem to come across vintage pairs that are WAY too tiny for me. This gives me a new lease on them! :) Thank you!

  4. I absolutely need to do this! I have a pair of pants that are too big for me now but I think they'd be perfect as bell bottoms.

  5. well hey, my hubby has some sympathy weight from my last pregnancy (or two, haha) and has a few things that were pretty spiff but are now too snug and I wouldn't have thought to raid his small PANTS for me!

  8. Thanks so much for this idea. My partner died almost two months ago, and I've been keeping all his clothes because I know I want to sew things with them. I'm also in need of new jeans - now one of these days I can just take his old pants and make them fit me. :) This is a great way to do that! ~Kelly

  11. I love how these look on you! Could you give more information on how you bring in the waist of a pair of jeans or pants that are too big? When I've tried the seam always turns out so bulky!

    1. Use the casing and put a few inches of elastic. There's a pin somewhere! Worked great for me

  18. This is awesome; I would have never thought of this! I can't wait to try it! Also, the hippie look is my forte so the more bell bottoms being worn in the world, the better the world will be :)
