I've always been a big fan of ruffle-y and flounce-y sleeves! They are pretty and fun and dress up any style of dress. In this case my maternity sheath dress I made with this tutorial (non-maternity here). It only takes in extra 30 minutes to add to any knit dress (or top!), with great results. As long as the top or dress can accommodate it. My dress was simple enough with the cap sleeves and simple shape. Imagine attaching them to onesies or other little girlie outfits? Oh the possibilities. The original non-knit and very non-maternity cropped top tutorial is here.
Supplies:
2+ yards of fabric, I used a medium to thick stretchy knit
This tutorial for the maternity sheath dress or this tutorial for the non-maternity sheath dress
*optional - thin lining fabric
scissors
sewing machine
measuring tape
pins
marking pen or you can use pins

Instructions:
1. Make a maternity sheath dress with this tutorial - but make sure you make a small cap sleeve (if that is the look you are going for) by glancing at how this tutorial's sleeve was cut and made.
2. To make flounce sleeve - take these measurements -
-by first finding the circumference of the inner circle by measuring the length from the bottom of your chest over your shoulder to the bottom of your shoulder blade. That will be the circumference.
-Then divide that by 3.14, then by 2 to get the radius of the inner circle.
- Then lay out fabric that can accommodate both circles. Fold your fabric in half with enough room for the circles to be cut out on the fold in half.
-To cut out the half circles, take the inner radius and measure it out on the fold. Then mark 2 inches out from there on ones side starting on the fold. Taper it to get bigger at least 4 to 7 inches (depending on how wide you want the sleeve). Cut 2 of these out. Will look like below. If you want teh edge to be finished you can cut 2 more pieces from the knit or a lining fabric.
-then cut open the smaller side open on the fold. When opened it will have a nice wave-y effect.
3. OPTIONAL - you can leave the edges unsewn because knit doesn't fray (thats what I did). But you can hem the outside under a 1/4" or add a lining fabric. If you want to add a lining then cut out 2 more circles and follow this tutorial on how to add the lining go here and look at step 4 and 5.
4. Sleeve will look like this when straightened. Serge or zig zag stitch the inner edge of the circle (if you used a lining that isn't knit).
5. Mark where you want the inner edge (the straighter side) of the flounce will be on your dress.
6. Pin the outside inner edge of the flounce to the markings on the shirt. Sew 1/4" from edge.
7. Flip over and topstitch the flounce down 1/8" to 1/4" from the seam.
8. Hem the sleeves to hit just inside the flounce and the neckline follow this tutorial or just sew it under for a quick finish (I did that the quick way).1.
