DIY everyday shorts with pockets tutorial

IMG_4253cIMG_4231cIMG_4258c IMG_4338cIMG_4342cIMG_4348 These floral shorts may have a lot of steps to them, but they are pretty straight forward. I love how it requires very little fabric with whatever fabric you want....and there are pockets!! I'm need to make some striped shorts desperately. Perfect little pair of shorts for any vacation or summer outing. Suit: Asos bottom and top: self-made

Supplies: 1/2 yard to 1 yard of softer fabric (nothing too heavy if you are using elastic) 1" - 1.5 " wide elastic half width of your waist stretched scissors pins sewing machine thread Instructions:
1. Cut 2 rectangles out making them as long as at least 1/2 your hip width + 3 to 5 inches (the more inches you put in the wider the short openings will be). And make them as long as you want your shorts + hemming (a few inches). Also cut 4 pocket pieces (optional) to be about 6" - 8" X 8" - 10" - just so they fit nicely in your shorts like picture #3. If you want pockets....do steps 2 - 4. If not, skip to step 5. 2. Fold one rectangle in half and snip off the edge for the pocket. 3. Attach one of the pocket squares to line up perfectly with the shorts, then sew along the edge of the cut (the cut from #2). Then cut off the pocket's extra to mimic the bigger rectangle. Fold up and out. 4. Attach the second pocket square by matching up the 2 pocket pieces perfectly and sewing along the edges of the pocket pieces, leaving where the pocket and the short join alone. Should look like the last photo. Repeat steps 2-4 with the other side of the front piece of the shorts. Starred Photos367 5. Line up the front and back piece of the shorts together, RST. Then fold in half so the outside seams (where the pockets are) will be touching. Put a pair of shorts you have folded in half down, sliding the crotch part to the fold (away from the pockets). Cut out the arch. This is where the extra 3-5 inches come in from step 1. 6. Take the inside seam and sew them up, they will be short...they are the legs. 7. Flip right side out and pin the inside center seams together...it will look like the last photo once all sewn up. floral shorts 8. Make a waistband that is at least as long as your hips (so it can fit up and over them), make it as wide as your elastic's width plus 1.25" for the seam allowance. 9. Fold under one side a 1/2" and iron. 10. Pin and sew the waistband (the raw edge - not the ironed 1/2" piece), RST, to the short's top edge. 11. Flip up the waistband and iron it flat. 12. Flip under the waistband and iron down and pin in place. Starred Photos369 13. Measure you elastic to be half your waist when stretched. Then insert it into the back half of your shorts, pin from side seam side seam. Then sew a few lines of straight stitches on each end. Looks like the photo to the right of #13. 14. When it is on the machine, pull the elastic and the fabric flat, then sew at the edge of the waistband with zig zag or straight stitch. Looks like the picture to the right of #14. 15. Flip to the front of the shorts, and sew down the front of the waistband.1 16. Hem the bottom of the shorts floral shorts1
