DIY asymmetrical knit sheath dress

I love this spin on a traditional sheath dress, and i love even more that it is knit! Just wishing I had my pre-breast feeding boobies to wear with it. I find this would be a perfect date night dress or (if a little longer...I may have made it a bit too short oops) something to throw on and chase your kids around at church or a wedding. It was a quick make, I conquered it during oli's nap time, so I know any of you can do it too. This dress does call for darts, but I have an easy alternative too (I wish I had done that instead!).

Supplies:
at least 2 yards of knit fabric (I used about 1.5)
knit top that you can mimic the other the dress top's stretchiness and shape
thread
sewing machine
pins
scissors
Instructions:
1. Cut out the top mimicking a knit top you already own, that has the same amount of stretchiness as your fabric. Make sure to add seam allowance and an inch or so just in case (you can always make it smaller).
2. Cut out the neckline like you like it and sew it under (you can make an even nicer neckline by making adding a bias cut strip and sewing it RST then flipping it inside)

The diagram shows steps 3-5 followed by the real pictures as well showing the same thing.
3. Cut out the bottom wrap skirt like below. Then sew the front part under 1" using an invisible hem tutorial (here) or just top stitching it.
4. While trying it on fold the rectangle into thirds like a wrap skirt, and line it up like the picture below. Pin in place and take it off. Sew the top of the skirt down straight across to eliminate the asymmetry on the top.
5. Find the center of the back of the skirt, split the back into quarters. the first and third quarter are where your darts are going to be. Dart it in as much as you need taken in for your waist and dart into a diagonal. OR If you don't want to dart (I wouldn't either...it can be hard) Then sew in the sides like you would be taking something knit in. You can create side seams and just make it as tight as you want. Got to love knits!

6. Sew the top  part  to the bottom part with right sides together (the fronts of the fabric touching) at the openings at the waist.
7. Try on and mark and hem the bottom of the skirt at least 1" if you haven't done so already using this tutorial.

  1. Would I be able to use a fabric like satin for this if I don't have any knit?
