DIY tee to pencil skirt refashion - worn 2 ways

b+askirt This was a project that I finished the first week of my morning sickness (all day and night sickness) and loved it and still do ( but never fashioned it due to laying in bed or couch for the next 2 months+ months)! I love how easy and fast it is to make, how resourceful it is for the materials (I'm going to make about 20 of these to wear instead of pants for the next 6 months), how cute the end product is, how comfy it is, and etc. I did initially make this from a polo shirt, mainly because it had cute gray and black mini stripes, so you see the polo button line going down the middle of my bum. Which I actually love. This is one of those throw it on kind of skirts, where you can top it off with a sweater and knee high boots perfect for when you're in a hurry...and you will still look dressed up. My kind of outfit. IMG_5278ct-shirt skirt IMG_5280c IMG_5245c IMG_5299c IMG_5230c IMG_4414c

Supplies:
-oversized tee or polo made with knit fabric (stretchy material, preferably thicker)
-knit pencil skirt that has the same kind of stretch as the top (optional)
-sewing machine
-scissors
-matching thread
-pins
-1-1.5" elastic for waist

Instructions:
1. First, make sure the top you find will fit you, slip it on oddly if you need or guess. Lay the top out and flatten on table, mark
2. Cut the top off (straight across just beneath the collar) and sleeves off.
3. Mark the new pencil skirt in the top by either trying it on inside out and pinning yourself into it or grabbing a knit pencil skirt you own and tracing it to that. Make sure the pencil skirt you own has the same stretch as the shirt you making one from. Cut it out.
4. Sew up the sides of the skirt. The bottom have the same hem from the shirt. Try on and take in areas if necessary. Then sew on the elastic you have measured to your waist. Line up the elastic's top edge with the skirt's outside top edge and sew the very top edges together with a zig zag stitch. Then flip the elastic inside the skirt and add a longer straight stitch - your topstitch - (your preference of a 1/4" to 1" down) to the top. Make sure to STRETCH as you sew, otherwise the opening won't be stretchy.
